Large-scale Swedish colonization began in the thirteenth century, along the coastal fringes of the Gulfs of Bothnia and Finland, in areas later known as Uusimaa (Swedish Nyland), Varsinais Suomi (Finland Proper), and Pohjanmaa (Ostrobothnia) as well as on the Aland Islands between Sweden and Finland. For the most part the Swedes settled coastlands which were not intensively used by the Finns - whose main centres of population were further inland - and there was little friction between the two linguistic communities.

An attempt was made in the 1440s by one called Bonde, son of Karl Knut, to detach Finland from the Scandinavian Union. He did not achieve this, nor did he succeed in making himself master of all Finland. He did, however, accept from King Christopher (Kristoffer) a fiefdom which covered eastern Finland, and in 1442 he took control of Viipuri castle. This was of vital importance to the trade with Novgorod, and provided a useful income as well as being a power base in the defence of the eastern frontier.
